There was news earlier this week that WWE once looked at Kalisto as the next Rey Mysterio, but the belief is that he’s failed to live up to that hype. First of all, that’s a poor way to motivate a talent by putting that kind of unfair pressure on them. That expectation would be at least somewhat warranted if WWE booked Kalisto strongly instead of being part of a tag team that wasn’t booked strongly on the main roster either.

Owens worked with each of the Lucha Dragons last month in singles matches. If WWE wants to build Kalisto up to fill that Mexican market, he’s going to need to be booked correctly against a heel. Kalisto suddenly emerging in a battle royal or an unexpected win to become No. 1 Contender for Owen’s championship would be a great way to give him momentum and make him a bigger player.

After that, it’s Kalisto vs. Alberto Del Rio. That is the feud that makes Kalisto a new star.
