It might have been needed. Roman Reigns has been WWE Universal Champion since August 30, 2020. That is among the longest World Title reigns in WWE history and there is nothing to suggest that he will be losing the title for a rather long time. You do not see someone last this long without something special, though it seems WWE wanted to give Reigns a big shakeup.
According to Ringside News, Reigns and Paul Heyman have turned down a WWE suggestion that Reigns turn into a babyface. A member of the WWE creative team said that Reigns and Heyman talk about how the character is the top attraction in WWE and therefore not something that needs to change. Reigns is said to have creative control of his character and would be able to turn down the idea of becoming something new.
Opinion: I would agree with Reigns and Heyman on this point, as WWE does not have the best track record when it comes to Reigns as a good guy. At the same time, Reigns as a heel is something that works so well that I can’t picture how switching him around would be a smart way to go. Stick with what is working until it doesn’t anymore and everything should be fine.
What do you think of the idea? Will Reigns change? Let us know in the comments below.
