Gotcha, Summerslam version! One of the best things about wrestling is when you think you know what’s going to happen and then get caught by surprise. This can happen in a variety of ways, from a surprise return to a shocking betrayal to a huge upset. You never know what you might get, which is a big part of what makes watching wrestling so much fun. Summerslam has a great history of this and WWE is taking a look back at it.
Are they still surprises if it’s a flashback?
WWE has released a new Top Ten video looking at the Biggest Summerslam Shockers. The list includes a mixture of betrayals, upsets, surprise wins and returns with a few other things thrown in. The list begins all the way back at the first show in 1988 and runs up through modern shows, with some of the entries only being a few years old. There are probably a few things that you haven’t thought of in a little while.
Opinion: Summerslam is in a weird place as it’s the least interesting of the Big Four. It doesn’t have a namesake match and it’s not Wrestlemania, leaving it as just this one show that is promoted higher than most others. Having a bunch of surprises like this is one of the only ways to stand out, though having the Bellas above Ultimate Warrior vs. Honky Tonk Man and Paul Bearer turning on Undertaker made me stop the video and rub my eyes.
