Once more, with feeling. Sunday night at “Payback 2017”, Chris Jericho won the US Title for a second time in quite the surprise. After announcing that he was leaving for the latest Fozzy tour, it was clear that he wouldn’t be around much longer. That didn’t stop him from defeating Kevin Owens for the title in a “Wrestlemania XXXIII” rematch though. Now it’s just over 24 hours later and another match has been set.
Tonight on “Monday Night Raw”, it was announced that Owens would receive his rematch for the title tomorrow night on “Smackdown Live”. There are no stipulations announced for the match but there is a strong chance that this is going to be the way to write Jericho off TV so he can go on tour. The winner of this match will likely defend against AJ Styles at “Backlash 2017”.
Opinion: This is about as obvious as you can get and there’s nothing wrong with that. As soon as Jericho won the title back, the common guess was that he’d be losing it again almost immediately. While it might seem like a rash decision to change the title back just for the sake of Jericho losing it almost immediately, it did give “Payback 2017” a much needed shot in the arm.
