There has to be a catch. AEW really is one of the most fascinating wrestling promotions of all time as they have gone from not existing to actually beating SmackDown’s ratings (with a few caveats but they did win) in their fourth week on the air. That isn’t something anyone else could say and they have more than just television going on. AEW also has pay per views for their bigger events and that means they need some big matches to fill in those events. With so many things to cover, they need to have some special rules for a few of those matches. They covered one of them this week.
On this week’s Dynamite, it was announced that the long awaited Jon Moxley vs. Kenny Omega match at Full Gear will now be unsanctioned and lights out. This means that there will be no rules and AEW officially washes its hands of any responsibility should anything happen. The match result will also not count towards the wrestlers’ official win/loss records in AEW. This last detail did not sit well with Moxley, who ranted about the decision on Dynamite, both to AEW President Tony Khan and in a promo in front of the live crowd after he attacked Peter Avalon.
Their feud began when Moxley debuted in May at Double Or Nothing, the first AEW pay per view event. Moxley appeared at the end of the show and attacked Omega, who had just finished losing his main event match to Chris Jericho. The match was originally scheduled to take place at All Out but Moxley was forced out of the match due to an elbow infection. The new stipulation has been added due to Moxley being incredibly violent and AEW not being able to accept responsibility for whatever happens in the match.
They have teased fighting for a long time now. Check out some of their most recent actions:
Opinion: This is the kind of match that makes sense as the two of them have been ready to fight each other for a long time now. It has been established that they want to beat each other up so why wastes time with anything other than the big match that they should be having? Moxley is great in a violent style match and Omega should be able to do whatever is necessary to make up for the rest. This should be a heck of a match and one of the show’s highest level matches. Above all else, this has been set up properly and if they make it work right, they’ll do very well.
