Sometimes you go somewhere unexpected. There have been some interesting stories taking place in wrestling over the last few months but there are very few as entertaining as Cameron Grimes attempting to be the modern day Ted DiBiase. Grimes has tried his best to live up to DiBiase’s reputation and DiBiase has been added to the story to make it feel a lot bigger. It turns out that the original plan was quite different.
According to Shawn Michaels during the NXT Takeover: In Your House media conference call, DiBiase was not originally factored into the plans for the story. Grimes began mentioning DiBiase in his promos and eventually WWE called DiBiase to see if he was willing to come in. DiBiase agreed and was brought in to the story, which soon involved the Million Dollar Title as well.
Grimes’ issues with DiBiase began when he made a good deal of money in the stock market. As a result, Grimes began attempting to imitate DiBiase’s acts of offering people money to do various demeaning tasks. Eventually DiBiase appeared, often outsmarting and outspending Grimes. DiBiase would start talking about the Million Dollar legacy, which drew in LA Knight to compete with Grimes. The Million Dollar Title was added to the mix, with Knight winning the title at Takeover.
DiBiase has been pretty awesome in NXT. Check out his time around:
Opinion: This is a pretty cool detail, as DiBiase is about as perfect of a person as you can add to a story like this one. DiBiase is one of the most well remembered characters in WWE history and there was no one better to put into this spot. I’m not sure where DiBiase is going next, but it gives me some hope for the future that NXT is willing to make a change like this and have some fun.
