That’s a big endorsement. Earlier this week on Monday Night Raw, Finn Balor got a big surprise upgrade as he became the new #1 contender to the Universal Title. This wasn’t a likely case just a week ago but it turns out that Braun Strowman wasn’t ready for the title shot (or might never have been the plan in the first place). It turns out that Balor was selected for a certain reason.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Universal Champion Brock Lesnar was the one who wanted Balor to get the spot in the match. Lesnar has had success wrestling smaller names such as AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan at the two most recent Survivor Series. Lesnar had wanted the match last year but Vince McMahon shot the idea down as Balor wasn’t considered a big enough star for the match.

It got him somewhere. Check out how Balor earned the title shot:

Cena vs. Bálor vs. McIntyre vs. Corbin - Winner faces Lesnar at Royal Rumble: Raw, Jan. 14, 2019

Opinion: It’s true that Lesnar has been nailing his matches with smaller guys and I could picture this one being the exact same thing. The Coup de Grace could get a heck of a reaction if the near fall is hot enough and I have a feeling that’s what would happen. The match could be really entertaining and maybe a surprise could go down with Balor walking out as champion.
