Someone has to go first. There are a lot of titles to be won in professional wrestling. Some of these are more prestigious than others but what matters is that they offer value to wrestlers, at least in the eyes of the fans. Therefore, title changes are some of the most interesting and important things in all of wrestling. They mean a change of the guard and possibly a new era, or at least a smaller one depending on which title it is. At some point though, the title has to be won for the first time though, and that was the situation this week in AEW.
In the main event of this week’s episode of Dynamite, Kazarian and Scorpio Sky of SCU faced the Lucha Bros to crown the first ever AEW World Tag Team Champions. This was the final match of a tournament which saw both teams advance through a field of seven teams. SCU defeated the Best Friends and the Dark Order while the Lucha Bros defeated Jurassic Express and Private Party. SCU’s original team was Kazarian and Christopher Daniels, but the Lucha Bros attacked Daniels before their first round match, putting Daniels on the shelf with a pinched nerve.
SCU went on to defeat the Lucha Bros to become the inaugural champions when Kazarian pinned Pentagon with a small package. This marks only the second two on two tag team loss for the Lucha Bros in AEW after they lost to the Young Bucks in a match for the AAA Tag Team Titles at Double Or Nothing. At the moment, it is not clear when SCU will have their first title defense or if Daniels will be allowed to be involved in title matches under the Freebird Rule.

Opinion: This makes sense given the story that had been set up in previous weeks. Having the Lucha Bros attack Daniels and put him on the shelf gave SCU extra incentive to take the titles here, but at the same time it is a little bit more long term thinking. Above all else, it should be noted that SCU is not likely to be around as long as the Lucha Bros or several other AEW tag teams, merely due to their age (Sky is the youngest member of the team at 36 while Kazarian is 42 and Daniels is 49). They need something like this to make them a bigger deal in a hurry and the inaugural title win will do just fine in that regard.
