WWE. The great ones always come back. WWE is such a unique place as you can present it in so many different ways. A wrestling show can be serious, emotional, lighthearted, comedic, fun, athletic based or some combination of everything in between. No matter how you present it though, the whole thing comes down to having people get in a ring to settle their differences, which is as simple of a premise as you can get. Such a premise does leave wrestling wide open for parody though, and that means some of them are going to be a lot better than others.
Back in 2017, WWE released a series of videos on its YouTube page under the name Southpaw Regional Wrestling. The videos were said to be a long lost videotape of a small wrestling promotion from the 1980s. The idea of the series was a collection of vignettes from Southpaw Regional Wrestling, an over the top parody of a studio wrestling series featuring wrestlers as the character. This included John Cena, Chris Jericho, the Good Brothers, and Rusev among many others as referees, hosts, interviewers and wrestlers. The shows were a hit, with Southpaw Regional Wrestling merchandise being sold by WWE.
The videos were followed by a second round later that year, though the series has been on hiatus ever since. However, that may be changing next year, as Fandango posted a message to his Instagram page saying that fans should stay tuned for more Southpaw Regional Wrestling in 2020. There are no further details on a potential return for the series, which featured Fandango as the co-host alongside Cena. The series is currently available on the WWE Network.
If you haven’t seen these before, or even if you have, you owe yourself another look. Check out some of this greatness:
Opinion: Yes. Yes yes, yes yes yes, yes. In every sense of the word. This is one of the funniest, most entertaining and well thought out things that WWE has ever done and they are more than smart to bring it back. The concept does not need to be anything more than a few videos with a loose theme and the whole thing will be just fine. There is no point in doing anything more than having a little fun and leaving the fans wanting more. WWE is a huge company, but they are more than able to make fun of themselves and that is what they are doing here.
