Who is wrestling’s #3? A few weeks back, Vince McMahon declared John Cena as the Babe Ruth of professional wrestling. That’s some high praise for any performer and while there’s no question that Cena is one of the biggest stars of all time, calling him the Ruth of wrestling might be a stretch. One wrestling legend has another name in mind.
Eric Bischoff recently weighed in on the discussion and said he considered Hulk Hogan to be the Ruth of the professional wrestling world. Bischoff basically says that while Hogan might not have been the best at any one given thing, he was the one that changed the way wrestling worked forever. Here are the comments with transcription courtesy of WrestleZone.com:
“I think a lot of it had to do with when baseball kind of emerged that made him such an important part of our culture. To me Hulk Hogan was that guy. It’s not that there weren’t great athletes and Superstars before him because there were. Andre The Giant being one of them that passed the torch so that Hulk could go on to become Hulk Hogan. Hulk was in my opinion is like Babe Ruth because he was right there at that right place at that right time.”
Here’s a video of Bischoff’s comments:
Opinion: It’s hard to argue with this line of thinking. Ruth changed the way baseball worked forever and there will never be anyone else like him. The same is true for Hogan. After he exploded on the wrestling world, it was all about the presentation and there was no looking back.
