WrestlingInc recently reported that “The Icon” appeared at the Motor City Comic Con in Detroit. While there, he was interviewed by ABC’s WXYZ-TV.
Sting was asked a variety of questions, while standing in his wrestling gear despite retiring at the Hall of Fame in 2016. One of these questions was based around The Undertaker, someone who Sting has notably wanted to wrestle his entire career, but never got the chance to. Sting would go on to say that he regrets the match could not happen, which may be due to the neck injury he sustained.
“I always wanted to wrestle Undertaker. That was a worldwide dream match, I think, and it was my dream match too. I always wanted to do that with Taker, just one time. I thought it would’ve been a good way to go out, but you know, I hurt my neck and the rest is history.”
Sting first appeared in WWE at Survivor Series 2014, helping Dolph Ziggler to pin and eliminate Seth Rollins of Team Authority which would subsequently lead to a match between Triple H and Sting at WrestleMania 31. Despite this, The Undertaker and Sting never met face to face in a WWE ring.
Editor’s Note:
I always wanted to see this match, but there is no denying that even if both weren’t retired, they still wouldn’t be able to go at the intensity or level they could have five to ten years ago, even. I would rather this remain a ‘what could have been’ instead of a ‘this just let me down’ type of situation.
The Undertaker is my favorite wrestler of all time, so I always pictured this match, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.
