Amber Nova Talks Women’s Revolution, Ronda Rousey, Her WWE Dream

Rising Impact Wrestling Knockout Amber Nova was a guest on The Wrestling Epicenter where she spoke about her goals, the women’s revolution, Ronda Rousey and her dream of being a WWE Superstar.

Nova introduces herself to begin the interview.

“I am the classic car driving pro wrestler. I drive a ’73 Chevy Nova. The Garage is pretty much… I was born in Jersey, my parents were born and raised in Jersey. But, I grew up in Beaufort, Hilton Head Islands, South Carolina area.  The Garage is pretty much where I’m built from. My identity. My dad’s a mechanic. I drive a ’73 Chevy Nova. I weird a wrench. I carry a wrench down to the ring with me. Any chick, or man, that steps into the ring with me, I’m ready to give a tune-up. That’s what the wrench is for! (laughs) I am from the Garage because that’s who I am. That’s my wrestling identity. That’s my character.”

She left her career as an EMT to take up wrestling, which she had a passion for.

“So, I was an EMT. I did Medical Transport for a couple of years and was going to sign on to County Service and probably retire in 20 years. But then, there was always that.. You know, you’re driving around in an ambulance all day. You’re with your partners. You’re helping people. But, I always would watch wrestling with my dad when I was a kid and still dod when I grew older. I saw these young women coming on the scene – Sasha Banks, Paige. And, I was like, “Wow, you know, they don’t look like Chyna. And, I don’t look like Chyna. But, I’m pretty athletic and I think I can hold my own.” It was just a dream. And, I had to balls to the wall, excuse my language, just go for it. So, I moved down to Orlando by myself because I knew the WWE Performance Center was down here, I knew Impact Wrestling did their TV tapings down here, I knew that Orlando was the heart of Florida. I knew that Florida was the next state so I wouldn’t move too far from my family which I think is a good thing. I just shifted it into Nova Drive and just did it! (laughs)”

Nova trained at the Team Vision Dojo, and how she is evolving because of that.

“That is where I had my first match and that is where I train, the I Believe in Wrestling school known as the Team Vision Dojo. That is where I came down and met many wrestlers. I’ve had a great time. At this school, I’ve had seminars with Hector Guerrero, Marty Jannetty, Saraya Knight, Scott Hall, Larry Zbyszko… I could just keep naming people I’ve been able to meet and learn from and take bits and pieces from, who walk into this dojo to train and perfect their craft. I’m trying to perfect my craft by different styles that I can incorporate into my style and my craft.”

She had the opportunity to work with Malia Hosaka, a legendary female wrestler.

“Yes, Malia Hosaka! I wrestled her at the Monsters Wrestling Orlando in downtown Orlando. Definitely a tough cookie. I held my own with her as best as I could. It was a great experience and I definitely learned a lot. I was on the radio talking about it. When I was in the ring with her, I was like “Damn! She’s my mom’s age and she’s kicking my ass!”  (laughs) It was good. It was damn good.”

She explains how she got to work with Impact Wrestling.

“Sonjay Dutt was looking for girls that could work outside of the dojo. My trainers recommended me. That is pretty much how it happened. I’ve been working really hard, pushing myself, meeting people, working to set up ring crew until I could get on shows.”

Nova confirms whether Impact has opened any doors in the industry for her.

“I definitely think it is helping. Maybe people see me as an underdog because I have been losing my matches on there. I’m not a signed talent. I’m not contracted. I’m doing other work with other companies I’m hoping to get signed with possibly. I’m not ready to sign a contract anywhere.”

She doesn’t appear to be saddened by any losses.

“No, it is not about winning or losing. Jeff Hardy lost to Scott Hall and get squashed by him… I think it was Jeff Hardy, don’t quote me. And, look at him now. Everybody in this business started learning and gaining experience. Even though I might be losing my matches, I get back in that ring and I show a little bit more and I show a little bit more. It is not about if you win or lose. At the end of the day, was I a good opponent? Can I perfect my craft? I mean, obviously, I want to win. We’re not in that ring to lose. But, when you’re new in your career like me, I’ve only been training for… May will be 3 years, I’ve been doing matches for 2. and I’ve been doing TV work for almost a year.  I think I’m doing pretty good and I’m on the fast track!”

On if she could be back with Impact to continue working and potentially get a push.

“I do. I think it is possible I’ll be back. I’ve gotten great feedback from everybody there. So, yeah, it is possible.”

Nova explains what she feels caused the women’s revolution in wrestling.

“There’s just so many options to go off of. I think it is wonderful I”m able to come up in wrestling at this time, as in any other time. I’m grateful to be coming up when I am. Women are getting some great opportunities. I’m grateful to be coming up during the time that I am. Women are getting a chance to showcase their talent. They’re getting more TV time. They’re getting more time period.  I think it is awesome!”

She gives her opinion on Ronda Rousey going to WWE.

“That is a whole other opponent right there! (laughs) Bless her. That is a bad ass woman. And, I absolutely love her Roddy Piper style and gear that she’s rocking. It totally suits her.”

Nova comments on the line between women being seen as eye candy and serious athletes.

“I don’t think it has to be sex appeal. It could just be an attraction. The males come out with body oil, six-pack abs. I think I can hang with the boys, I have abs as well. They want to show off their abs and their bodies. You want to be an attraction and you want to be attractive. It doesn’t have to be sex. It could be being a fit, fitness model. Being a role model for kids saying, “Hey, even if you guys just do push-ups and go for a run. Keep your body active! Don’t sit in the house and play video games all day or whatever it is.” Women are allowed to be proud of how they look. I work hard on my body. I think I can flaunt it a little just like the men do.”

She confirms whether she is interested in going to WWE.

“That is THE goal. That is THE goal! (laughs)”

Nova lists who she’d like to face in WWE, mentioning an upcoming match for Atomic Wrestling Entertainment (AWE) where she will face former WWE Superstar Tenille (Emma).
