It was during a six-women tag match pitting Absolution (Paige, Sonya DeVille & Mandy Rose) against Sasha Banks, Bayley and Mickie James at the Nassau Coliseum on December 27, 2017 where Paige suffered said injury.
Despite only being 25- Paige is a long-time veteran of the ring, debuting at the age of 13. She competed in shows promoted by her family around the U.K.
When she came to WWE, the former Divas Champion sparked a revolution alongside former WWE Superstar Emma, who was recently released.
This paved the way for superstars like Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Nia Jax, Asuka, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Bayley and Sasha Banks to shine and create magic for the women in WWE.
As Meltzer explains, Paige was informed this past week on ‘Raw’ that her in-ring career within WWE is over- despite the British-born Superstar believing there is still a chance for her.
The original injury Paige sustained was most likely due to wear-and-tear over the years. She first felt the pain after taking a bump outside the ring and woke up the following morning in extreme pain. A lot of sleepless nights ensued, adn after she started to botch moves- she told WWE management and was later diagnosed with a herniated disc and now reportedly is suffering with spinal stenosis.
It was only her seventh match back at the Nassau Coliseum where this injury would occur. For those unfamiliar with the incident, you can find a video of the injury below.
Meltzer explained that Banks should not get the blame for it- as it was a pre-planned move that Banks and Paige had been already performing during their live event matches together- even just the night before. Paige should’ve known that was coming based on the series of events.
What went wrong, ultimately, was that Paige was relaxed in the ring and didn’t brace herself for the impact. This would cause her to get the stiff shot that has seemingly ended her career. Had she not been injured prior to this it would have likely just been a stinger that hurt for the rest of the night, at most.
That said, Meltzer does believe the decision to do the spot was a bad call. That is no fault of Banks or Paige, but whoever had the idea for the spot in the first place.
What do you think about the situation? Would you like to see Paige compete elsewhere or hang up the proverbial boots?
