World Wrestling Entertainment have confirmed reports that Randy Orton was attacked by a fan during Tuesday evening’s live event in Cape Town, South Africa.

In an article on it’s website, WWE confirm the altercation took place during the event and that the fan involved is currently being held by local authorities, pending criminal charges.

WWE.com has learned that Randy Orton was violently attacked by an audience member during a SmackDown World Tour Live Event in Cape Town, South Africa, this evening. Footage of the attack was captured by a WWE fan and posted to YouTube, and shows the perpetrator striking Orton from behind. The matter is currently under investigation by the local authorities, and the South African fan is being held in jail pending criminal charges. The extent of Orton’s injuries are unknown at this time.

In an unusual move, WWE have posted the video of the attack to it’s own YouTube channel. The video was taken by a fan from ringside. This type of incident is rare but does happen occasionally, although it’s unheard of for WWE to publicly acknowledge such an event, let alone post a fan-captured video of it.
