A couple of weeks ago, Wrestling Rumors noted that a War Games match was something that had been floated around between The Shield and Evolution headed into “Extreme Rules” at one point. However, it was then reported that the arena would not be big enough to support such a match.
In fact, it was reported by many throughout the Internet that a War Games match would be impossible due to the size of the arena space that the setup would take up. The match, which traces its origins back to WCW, would incorporate two rings, requiring major setup space that would also decrease on crowd draw.
WrestlingInc.com, however, notes that the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa, Fla. may actually have the necessary space to utilize both rings. The arena will host the “Battleground” special event, taking place on July 20. Last year, rumors circulated that there could have been some War Games incorporation with this particular show, but that ultimately came to no avail.
Triple H is a known wrestling historian, and has been high on WCW-conceived ideas in the past. It is expected that a program between him and Roman Reigns will occur at some point during the summer or fall, possibly even at “SummerSlam.” If that’s the case, a War Games match could be another step towards that direction.
Editor’s Note
The only thing that could throw a few people off is what a War Games match is. WCW hasn’t been around since 2001, and much of its target audience wasn’t even born yet. However, this could be seen as good promotion for the WWE Network, if it’s worked out. I wouldn’t count on it, still.
