Lance Russell is a wrestling legend in the Memphis-region, where his voice is synonymous with fans over the course of several generations. And now, Russell may make one more appearance alongside a fellow Memphis wrestling legend.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Russell may introduce Jerry “The King” Lawler before the upcoming episode of “Monday Night Raw” in the area on Sept. 22. Russell is in town for a “Tribute to The King” wrestling show produced by Lawler for Thursday, and was expecting to stay in the area just to announce Lawler to the ring before the camera goes live.
Dave Meltzer goes on to note there is a chance the appearance could get scrapped, as WWE hasn’t been on the best terms with him in the past merely due to him not being part of their history. He goes on to note, however, Russell’s aid in getting Lawler’s wrestling illustrations while Lawler was in high school played a role of getting him into the industry, and Lawler had even requested Russell induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame several years ago.
Russell is currently 88 years old, and retired from the industry in 1997. Prior to that, he was an announcer in the region dating all the way back to 1959, spending much of his time in NWA Mid-America and the Continental Wrestling Association.
Editor’s Note
This would be a great touch for the live crowd, which should happen. Here’s to hoping it does.
