The wrestling industry was rocked early Monday morning, as TMZ has confirmed Spike and its parent company Viacom have chosen not to renew “Impact Wrestling,” the flagship show of TNA Wrestling.
Wrestlezone’s Mike Killam reported late Sunday night several of his sources had told him the station had chosen not to renew the show and had informed TNA President Dixie Carter of such. It is said Carter met with her inner circle this past week after having been made aware, with an additional meeting being held on Sunday to inform others.
The TMZ report further states:
“We’re told there’s no bad blood, and Spike gave TNA such advance notice so it would have time to shop for a new TV deal.”
“Impact Wrestling” began on the FOX Sports regional networks before moving to Spike in Fall 2005 following “Monday Night RAW’s” return to USA. The company famously brought in WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan and former WCW figurehead Eric Bischoff to dramatically change the company in 2010, which ultimately led to a four-year slide that put the company in dangerous position.
TNA has been dealing with several financial issues over the last year, including major overhauls of talent and shooting schedules. It was even noted in May the production crew for “Impact” had nearly walked out before a taping due to late checks.
It is unknown at this time as to whether the company has any other offers lined up from other stations or organizations. Should “Impact Wrestling” fail to find a new television home, it is likely the company will have a major crisis with continuing to operate going forward.
The company recently held a string of New York City television tapings, and will do so once more in August. After that, the status of the show is uncertain.
Editor’s Note
People enjoy ragging on TNA, but this is a sad day for the industry. It shows a decline in wrestling interest, and a company with real human beings potentially facing its biggest threat yet. Fingers crossed something can get worked out.
