Earlier this week, it was noted there have been some issues between former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton and WWE’s creative team over the past several months. It has been seen as a situation where Orton can decline something if he doesn’t like it, giving him a degree of booking power.
A new report in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter goes into further detail on the news.
As Dave Meltzer notes, Orton is essentially protected from any “stupid” storylines. He mentions while Orton, and on a grander scale, no one, is entirely protected, Orton has received a pass from those above him on being able to get around them. This adds on to the report that originally stated it would just be anything Orton didn’t like, but it now seems he has additional power in that notion.
Like the report from earlier, it ultimately boils down to his relationship with Triple H, with whom he has had a close relationship since their days in Evolution. The Executive Vice President of Talent Relations will and has gone to great lengths to ensure Orton is protected creatively, which has allowed him to stay out of these “stupid” stories.
Though not quite getting his direct rematch after losing the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, Orton has been consistently booked in main event programming. He is expected to turn babyface by WrestleMania 31, a notion that was teased this past Monday Night on “RAW” when he was curb-stomped by Seth Rollins.
It is rumored that Orton was injured in the main event of the show as well, though that has not been confirmed.
Editor’s Note
Some of Orton’s best in-ring work has come this year. He’s so smooth, it’s insane. When you put that work in, as long as it doesn’t become almost nepotistic, he can protect himself.
