According to an article Sunday morning from TMZ, legendary UFC fighter Chael Sonnen apparently wants to buy World Wrestling Entertainment when he retires from his career in mixed martial arts. No – that’s note a joke. Sonnen’s representatives even claim “It is 100% Chael’s intent to buy the WWE”. The TMZ piece claims he is even meeting with investors and “bigwig friends”.
WWE reps have responded to the matter, informing Sonnen’s camp that the company is not for sale, but encourage him to buy WWE stock and become a shareholder.
Ridiculous as this may seem, rumors about Chael’s UFC retirement have been circulating recently, after the 36-year-old fighter lost a Light Heavyweight Championship match to Jon Jones at UFC 159 and claimed he didn’t want to stick around if he wasn’t in title contention. However, during last week’s UFC Tonight, Sonnen cleared up the issue, calling Jones a “better fighter” and saying he wasn’t going to retire until him and Wanderlei Silva finally have their match.
Still, a UFC retirement can’t be too far off for the self-proclaimed “American Gangster” and “People’s Champion” Chael Sonnen. Given his friendship with former WWE Champion CM Punk, could we see the Great One of mixed martial arts one day come fact-to-fact with the Great One of professional wrestling?
