Though Raw has a Fatal Four-Way for its top women’s prize, the numbers are even bigger on the SmackDown side, with Alexa Bliss set to defend the title against every available woman on the roster.
So far, that means Becky Lynch, Natalya, Mickie James, and Carmella, but the possibilities are much wider than that. Obvious other contenders include Naomi, who may recover from injury in time to compete at a hometown WrestleMania, along with the the recently-cleared Tamina and Eva Marie, who has been off doing other media projects.
According to this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), however, the match could be far bigger than that. In addition to the possibility of Summer Rae hopping brands–she’s training at the performance center for a return–more than a few returning women have been speculated on as well.
Kelly Kelly is chief among those names, since she was one of the first to be reported on when it was learned that WWE had been contacting women about a WrestleMania appearance. Lita’s recent appearance in an independent ring indicates she’s interested in wrestling again, and the WON report also suggests that Lisa Varon could be a part of the match. In addition, Maria Kanellis has been speculated as a new WWE signee.
Though the SmackDown Women’s Title match might cynically seem like an attempt to get as many people on the card as possible, WWE may be planning far more than that.
