We here at Wrestling Rumors, as you might expect, report on a lot of wrestling rumors. But we do our best to sort out what’s reliable and what’s not, and let you know about the trustworthiness of our sources.

A recent rumor has been making the rounds suggesting that Sami Zayn has backstage heat, attributed to the venerable reporter Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The relevant quote comes from his summary of last week’s Monday Night Raw, specifically about the backstage segment featuring Zayn, Rollins, and Reigns preparing for their tag team match. “The purpose of this segment was not to get anyone over, or build the match,” wrote Meltzer. “It was to establish Zayn as a total geek. Zayn does have heat on him right now.”

Earlier in the week, Meltzer made similar comments about the segment’s purpose on Wrestling Observer Radio, but they we framed as speculation. No mention was made then of Zayn having “heat” backstage–that seems to be separate knowledge.

Obviously, Zayn beat Seth Rollins earlier this week for a spot in the Royal Rumble, and some fans questioned Meltzer on that point via Twitter.

Is there truth to the rumor? Certainly a bit. Meltzer is the most reliable voice in this business. But it’s important to know the actual context for what was said.
