Podcasting is the hot thing for retired wrestling personalities, and even a few who are still active. Chris Jericho is a prolific podcaster, as are names as varied as Steve Austin and Jim Cornette.
One who didn’t last long in the world of online radio, however, was Ric Flair. He gave up his Ric Flair Show earlier this year, without much warning or explanation. According to this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Flair made an appearance at the Wrestlecon kickoff party where he addressed the reason for dropping the show.
The Nature Boy said WWE had taken issue with some of the comments he’d made, and he feared that it might affect Charlotte’s position in the company. In particular, Flair drew heat over a comment that Finn Balor’s size would prevent him from ever main eventing WrestleMania. Flair reportedly said he “got so much heat from the company for that comment that you wouldn’t believe it.”
WWE is working to alter the perception about their show being the land of the giants, though that change certainly didn’t manifest in any of the main event contests at this year’s WrestleMania.
It’s a bizarre situation, and whether Ric’s concerns about Charlotte’s future are founded or not, it’s distressing to think they might actually be close to the truth.
