As much as we might love pro wrestling, there are other sports out there, and sometimes they take precedence over the wonderful world of sports entertainment.
WWE was booked for a March 18th date at New York’s legendary venue, Madison Square Garden. But a major match in the world of boxing was recently secured for the arena, putting MSG officials in a major pickle.
Wrestling Observer (subscription required) quoted MSG executive Joe Fisher from a press conference.
“A lot of you don’t know this, but I really need to thank the WWE. Everybody says, ‘Why the WWE?’ Well, we had an event booked on March 18, with the WWE, and they are just tremendous partners. They realized the magnitude of this event and the fact that we needed to have it here. It had to be at Madison Square Garden. So, with their cooperation and partnership, they were willing to move off the date, and make this date possible. So I really, really want to thank all the great people at WWE.”
The scheduled bout is a major title match between Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs. Dave Meltzer describes WWE’s willingness to move as a “favor” to Madison Square Garden officials.
Despite the Garden’s relatively limited capacity, it’s one of the most famous fight arenas in the world, and has hosted three WrestleManias. It’s also played host to many recent house shows, and it looks like the upcoming date was switched to March 12th. That show is scheduled to feature Brock Lesnar.
