Jim Ross returned to WWE last to call what appears to have been the Undertaker’s last match. It’s fitting that JR would call the Deadman’s final appearance, but it seems we could be seeing far more in the near future.
According to a podcast appearance from Dave Meltzer, JR is negotiating a full-time contract with WWE, making his main event WrestleMania appearance more than a one-off.
The key word there is “negotiating,” as we’ve seen no confirmation that the deal has yet been signed. However, given the sour feelings we’ve heard regarding JR’s departure from WWE in the past, it’s great to hear they’re back on working terms. (As if his calling the WrestleMania main event wasn’t enough.)
Meltzer speculates that this wouldn’t be a truly “full-time” deal, as JR likely wouldn’t want to work weekly TV. He might instead be calling big pay-per-view matches exclusively.
Reportedly, WWE is very concerned with ITV’s new show scooping up the legendary announcer, and doesn’t want to allow their potential UK competitor any advantages.
Whatever the reasons, though, we’ll be happy to see JR back under the WWE banner. His legendary voice added a great deal to the Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns match last night, and we’d love to see him call matches for far more of WWE’s current stars.
