Mauro Ranallo’s mysterious disappearance from the SmackDown announce desk two weeks ago has been a major topic of speculation, but he’s finally issued a brief statement on the matter.

Mauro’s absence was first reported on-air as being due to the blizzard which hit the northeastern US, then the next week was called a result of “illness.” Based on a recent report, the latter answer is closer to the truth–but not the whole story.
The gregarious announcer has had a lengthy battle with depression, at one point nicknaming himself the “Bipolar Rock & Roller.” He’s written extensively about his illness, and it has affected his career in the past. He previously missed calling an Invicta event due to a bout with depression.
We don’t yet know how WWE officials feel about Mauro’s absence, but his initial disappearance–the one reported due to weather–was met with criticism from other wrestling voices including Josh Matthews and Taz.
SmackDown co-announcer JBL also had some harsh words that first week, but those comments have since been deleted.
Regardless of the situation within the company, we wish Mauro the best in his recovery. Here’s hoping we’ll get some “mama mia” at the big matches of WrestleMania.
