WWE.com officially announced Monday, that WWE Champion John Cena will defend his title at Extreme Rules against Ryback. The event takes place on May 19th at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. We reported before WrestleMania 29 that Ryback would probably be John Cena’s next opponent.
The drama between Ryback and Cena has been stirring since Ryback attacked the WWE Champ, only one night removed from WrestleMania on Raw. Ryback then explained his actions the following week, explaining that he once believed in Cena, viewing him as a mentor and friend, but he also felt betrayed by the Champ when he never showed up to help him during his many brutal encounters with The Shield. Ryback also stated that he wanted the title, and would stop at nothing to get it. He ultimately “turned his back” on any relationship with Cena in Greenville, SC, when The Shield attacked the leader of the Cenation, and Ryback just watched on.
This is the first officially announced match for the card, although a triple-threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship between Alberto Del Rio, Jack Swagger, and champion Dolph Ziggler, and a Steel Cage match between Brock Lesnar and Triple H has been teased and rumored for the event.
