The latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has revealed details regarding a possible Triple H vs. The Rock match at WrestleMania 32 at AT&T Stadium on April 3, 2016. As previously reported, WWE teased the possibility and may have set up a year long build for the match in the ring during a segment between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 31.
WWE has teased the possibility of Rock facing Triple H again at WrestleMania on more than one occasion now. Not only did the company allow a long segment between Rock and Triple H to take place at WrestleMania 31, but they also have had encounters in the backstage area discussing another bout. In 2014, when Rock showed up at both “Monday Night Raw” and “Smackdown” back-to-back, a segment was shot backstage where he and Triple H got heated while talking about who would win if they faced off against one another again on a WrestleMania stage.
Rumors surrounding The Rock’s appearance and possible involvement in a match at WrestleMania 32 in Arlington, Texas in 2016 have been running wild. Not only are there rumors and obvious set-ups on camera for a Triple H vs. Rock match, but there have also been discussions about the possibility of Rock facing Brock Lesnar at the event. While those are merely rumors, Rock has admitted that he was originally slated to take on Lesnar at WrestleMania XXX before he was injured working with John Cena at WrestleMania 29, and his Hollywood schedule got too busy.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter writes,
“Regarding next year’s WrestleMania, when Dwayne Johnson and HHH did that angle on Smackdown last year, it was with the understanding they would build to a match for either this year or next year at WrestleMania. Johnson’s schedule wouldn’t allow him to train for a match on the show as he was to be promoting “Furious 7,” although he was able to be at the show.
That’s when Sting vs. HHH became the idea, with HHH going over, when they agreed to do Rock vs. HHH next year. It was separate from, but ended up being tied to, the other idea for Ronda Rousey vs. Stephanie McMahon.
The plan, such as it was and as best we can tell, still is, is not for a mixed tag. The plan is for two singles with HHH vs. Rock and Ronda Rousey vs. Stephanie next year. Both Heyman and Lesnar had brought up the idea that Lesnar had beaten Rock for the title and then Rock left for Hollywood in 2002 as a storyline, and had done other teases for a potential Rock vs. Brock match as well. One would think Rock vs. Brock would be a bigger match for WrestleMania, but it’s also a more physically dangerous match.
If they did that angle that was originally planned for 2014 with Vince vs. HHH for control of the company and Vince choosing Rock as his guy (the original angle was to bring Austin back and do Austin vs. HHH for control of the company, but Austin never agreed to it and Vince’s return for the angle, teased and advertised, was later dropped), then you could argue Rock vs. HHH could have more potential. But Vince has been kept away as a regular character for the past few years.”
No matter which match happens, the overall feeling of people behind-the-scenes believe that The Rock will compete at WrestleMania 32. It’s now just a question of, “who does he face?”

I freaking already can’t wait for Dallas. Bring…it…on!
