In addition, the two of them traded verbal jabs tonight, in a promo that was absolutely electric. However, it was obvious to everyone watching that the leader of the “CeNation” was dominant in every aspect of the segment.
He talked about how Reigns was “the chosen one” and was a corporate-made, John Cena “bootleg.” He also said, among other things, that took Reigns 5 years to learn how to do a half-way decent promo, which is one of the “complaints” that many fans have about him.
I don’t have a problem with any of what was said at all. It always adds a special layer of intrigue when wrestlers break “the fourth wall” and acknowledge what many of the fans say about the current product. (Side note: Cena acknowledged the fourth wall. Another reason why he is one of the best of all time).
What I do have a problem with though, is how Roman responded. His retort was similar to what has been said about Cena multiple times before: that he is a phony. A “yes-man,” who can be trained to do anything. He also said that Cena would try to “bury” all of the young talent in the company, even though his “United States Championship Open Challenge” gave opportunities to wrestlers like Kevin Owens and AJ Styles.
While I applaud Roman’s efforts, this was absolutely the wrong response. If any wrestler tries to go toe-to-toe with Cena and call him out on what he’s been called out on before, he or she will lose and be made to look incredibly weak.
And that’s exactly what happened. Cena threw Reigns’ insults back in his face and basically told him that he is the exact same type of character as Cena in WWE, except that Cena does it better.
However, there is a way that Roman Reigns can beat John Cena in a promo.
And it’s not that difficult of a concept. Simply admit what people say about you and shove it in their face.
Talking on the microphone isn’t what Reigns is known for, I get that. To that effect, to top John Cena in a promo, less is more.
Here’s how Roman Reigns can cut a promo and get over on John Cena:
“You know something, John? Almost every single thing that you say about me is exactly right. You call me a ‘corporately created, John Cena bootleg,’ and you know what? You’re partially right. I’m the guy that Vince McMahon chose to be the face of his company. And you can love me or hate me for it, but the bottom line is that I’m the man.
And maybe I’m not the “internet darling” that these people want to see. I’m not their “chosen one.” But guess what? I don’t give a damn. I’m the one standing here in the ring, not their “golden boy.”
And why me? Because every time that I get in the ring, night after night, I prove why I belong here. Not only do I bring out the best of every single person that I compete with, but then I go on and win. Don’t believe me? Ask Triple H, who I beat for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania. Ask The Undertaker, who I retired at WrestleMania.
Here’s the deal. I don’t cut flashy, over-the-top promos like you, John. I don’t have to, because I let my work in the ring speak for itself. The reason that you have so much energy and hype on the microphone is because you have to talk a big game to hide the fact that you can’t wrestle.
It’s time for you to go back to Hollywood where you belong, because I’m tougher, stronger and faster than you. This ring IS my yard, and at “No Mercy” I’m going to prove one thing: that your time is up, and my time is now.”
It might not have to be exactly like that, but something along these lines will be perfect for Reigns. He needs to acknowledge what people say about him, and throw it back in their face. If he does this, he can stand face-to-face with Cena and match wits with one of the best talkers of all time.
