Tonight on “205 Live,” a new General Manager will be named for a division that sorely needs it. For a long time, I have felt that the brand needs its own authority figure, as it will give legitimacy to what these incredibly talented athletes do, and make the show feel like an equal part of WWE programming.

Daniel Bryan made the historic announcement at the beginning of last week’s show, which you can see below:

The question now becomes, who would be a good fit for this role?

I have been pondering this question for a few days now, and have come up with some possible candidates for the job:

Drew Gulak: Gulak has been petitioning for a better “205 Live” for a long time now, and what better way could he achieve it, then by being the GM? His gimmick is great, and he could get some heel heat pretty quickly with both the performers and fans alike. And who doesn’t love an authority figure that can be rebelled against?

Titus O’Neil: When Akira Tozawa became a member of the “Titus Brand,” I immediately thought O’Neil would be a great fit to be the “205 Live” General Manager. While I don’t think it would happen, as it looks like he is still competing on “Raw,” his gift of gab and connection with the Cruiserweights make him a viable option.

Rey Mysterio: I think this is a name that many people thought of as soon as the new General Manager position was announced. I had immediately dismissed this idea, until I saw him be a surprise entrant in the “Royal Rumble.” Not only did he look fantastic in the ring, but as a legendary Cruiserweight, he fits WWE’s current pattern of bringing back legends to serve as authority figures. Examples include Kurt Angle, Daniel Bryan and William Regal. Mysterio could be a great addition to this trend.

Rey Mysterio makes a shocking return in the Royal Rumble Match: Royal Rumble 2018 (WWE Network)

Dean Malenko: Speaking of legendary Cruiserweights, the “Man of 1000 Holds” is up there as one of the best of all time. A brilliant ring tactician, Malenko has been a backstage ambassador for WWE for quite a while, and could easily slip into the GM role.

Had I written this article as soon as the GM announcement was made, I would have probably gone with either Gulak or Malenko.

However, since he made his return at the “Royal Rumble,” I’m going to go with Rey Mysterio to be the new “205 Live” GM. It makes the most sense to me, as he fits all of the trends that current WWE General Managers have: he is a legendary WWE performer, is good on the mic, and is respected by everyone in the business!
