Moments after Reigns retained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Styles in controversial fashion at WWE “Payback,” Vince McMahon was shown chatting backstage with Shane and Stephanie in the final segment of the show. Vince reminded the two that since they are now working together, they needed to decide whether or not Styles deserves a rematch for the title.
Shane immediately said that a rematch should occur, and that the match should take place at “Extreme Rules.” Vince and Stephanie both agreed, and it was decreed that Reigns and Styles would face off in an Extreme Rules match, at the aforementioned pay-per-view, upcoming on May 22.
A long sequence of events led to the finish of the “Payback” main event. First, Styles was unable to get Reigns back in the ring after throwing him out, which led to Reigns being counted out by the official. This would lead to Shane coming out and restarting the match with no count outs, as this was not the way that the pay-per-view should end.
Later in the match, Reigns accidentally hit Styles with a low blow as he was coming off the top rope, leading to Reigns being disqualified. However, Stephanie came out and said announced that the match would continue with no disqualifications, as the title match should not end that way either.
Reigns would eventually overcome interference by Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, and hit the spear on Styles, picking up the victory over him once and for all.
Editor’s Note:
No surprises here. “Extreme Rules” is mostly a rehash of the previous pay-per-view except with stipulations added; I just didn’t think it would come so quickly.
