Tonight at “SummerSlam,” Finn Bálor defeated Seth Rollins to become the first WWE Universal Champion in the company’s history. The finish came when Bálor hit the Coup de Grace on Rollins, in order to capture the title.
Balor won the opportunity to compete for the Universal Championship on the July 25 episode of “Monday Night Raw.” He won two matches throughout the course of the evening in order to earn the opportunity; first a Fatal-4-way match, and then a singles match against Roman Reigns.
“The Demon King” is also the longest reigning champion in NXT history, holding the title for a record 292 days.
Editor’s Note:
This was a good match, between two performers who will be main event players in the company for a long time. Unfortunately, the crowd hijacked the match by booing for the new Universal Championship belt. I have a feeling that it sucked the life out of the match, and didn’t allow it to have the proper aura that it deserved. Either way, this is a wonderful moment for Bálor, and is so well deserved. A big congratulations to “The Demon King!”
