According to a report from PWInsider, Randy Orton is unable to compete tonight at WWE’s “Backlash” pay-per-view. He was scheduled to face Bray Wyatt.
The report states that Orton has not been medically cleared to compete, following his loss to Brock Lesnar at “SummerSlam.” WWE was hoping that “The Viper” would be ready to go by tonight, but that is not the case at this moment. He is currently backstage in Richmond, Virginia, where the pay-per-view is being held.
It is unknown at this point what WWE will do with the storyline going forward. It is also being reported that his scheduled rematch with Lesnar at an upcoming Live Event on September 24 is in jeopardy of taking place as well.
The finish of the Orton/Lesnar match was surrounded in controversy, as “The Beast” unleashed a fury of offense on “The Viper,” causing him to bleed profusely. The referee stopped the match, and awarded Lesnar the victory via TKO, to end the show.
We will continue to monitor this story, and provide any updates as they become available to us.
Editor’s Note:
With only six scheduled matches on the card as of this point, this is a big blow for WWE. Not only that, but this is incredibly unfortunate news for Orton, as it will once again bring up the issues and discussions that occurred at the end of “SummerSlam” last month. Either way, this is a very unwelcome situation, and we certainly wish that not only can Orton recover in a timely fashion, but that WWE can come up with a plan to resolve the situation for tonight’s show.
