In the biggest news in professional wrestling this week, Roman Reigns revealed that he would be relinquishing the Universal Championship as the leukemia that he had been living with for 11 years had returned.
One of the big questions after the initial shock of the news had diminished is: who knew what was going on?
According to the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the news seemed to come out of nowhere. Few knew that Reigns had ever battled the disease, as either he, or Vince McMahon, if he even knew, decided not to share it publicly.
Reigns had missed the weekend house shows, and nobody was given an explanation as to why. During the day before Raw, those in creative were told that he would be relinquishing the title and that changes had to be made to the show. One of the changes was to execute the Dean Ambrose turn in the main event, after he and Seth Rollins were to beat Dolph Ziggler & Drew McIntyre to win the tag team titles.
Here is the announcement:
About an hour before Raw, a few people, including both Rollins and Ambrose, were told that Reigns would be opening up the show and giving up the title, but were also told that all would be explained when he did his promo. Reigns had told Ambrose and Rollins before the show to be ready to come out and meet him when it was done, but neither were told what it was about. Michael Cole also knew that the show would open with Reigns relinquishing the title, but it is also believed that he didn’t know why. Whether he told Corey Graves and Renee Young beforehand is unknown at this point.
Editor’s Opinion:
I wrote about this earlier this week, but I am still shocked and saddened by this news. Leukemia is no joke, but Reigns is the type of guy that would want the show to go on and for people to continue to enjoy professional wrestling for what it is. I know that he is going to beat this disease and come back stronger than ever.
