A victory over John Cena at WWE “SummerSlam” this past Sunday has made Seth Rollins the first man in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment to hold both the World Heavyweight and United States Championships simultaneously.
During the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon – who turned 70 years old on Monday – had not yet signed off on Rollins defending the United States Championship at the Toyota Center.
The bout with Sting will simply be for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, so if a United States Championship match is inevitably booked, that would mean Rollins would have to pull double duty at the pay-per-view.
This is similar to what Ring of Honor wrestling is currently doing with Jay Lethal, as he currently holds the ROH World Championship and ROH Television Championship.
A rematch between Rollins and Cena for the United States title at “Night of Champions” isn’t out of the question, unless WWE decides to put both titles up for grabs against Sting in the night’s main event.
Editor’s Note
I don’t think anyone would be opposed to Rollins wrestling two matches at the pay-per-view. His performance at “SummerSlam” was mesmerizing, showcasing why WWE has so much faith in him in the first place. The former Shield member has really stepped up his game since cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase at WrestleMania 31. He’s slowly becoming the face of the company, with an enormous claim to being the best in-ring performer on the planet today.
