WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin will be the cover boy for the upcoming “WWE 2K16” video game, which is set for release in North America on Oct. 27, 2015.

According to the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there was once a strong push within the company to have another superstar grace the cover.

Many felt current WWE competitor Roman Reigns would have been a solid fit, although the report notes that Austin had received a call from WWE Chairman Vince McMahon asking him to take that spot.

With “WWE 2K16” being such a major project, the belief was that the cover athlete had to represent the game’s magnitude appropriately, thus why Austin – one of the most popular superstars in the history of WWE – was chosen.

The number of confirmed playable characters for the game is now at 56, which recent names being added to the list including Diamond Dallas Page, Finlay, Randy Orton, Lex Luger, and Sheamus.

Editor’s Note

It’s difficult to imagine hardcore WWE fans being open to the idea of Reigns gracing the cover, as he’s still such a polarizing superstar who the WWE Universe has yet to fully invest in. Austin is the ultimate safe choice, and the “WWE 3:16” slogans simply write themselves.
