Nobody, at least of a certain age, is likely to be operating under the assumption that wrestling is real. The old, terrible movie Ready to Rumble is not reflective of reality. However, just because there is a bit of a script to pro wrestling, particularly the WWE, doesn’t mean everything is micromanaged to the last detail. There is some room for improvisation, but there are certainly rules. In fact, a recent leaked document has helped show just how many rules WWE performers are operating under.
Several websites on the internet are reporting on what is purported to be a leaked document from a WWE live event recently. It lays out some of the rules behind what should, and should not, happen in the WWE ring. Some of it is not surprising. Piledrivers are outlawed, and so is hitting somebody in the head with a foreign object, such as a chair or a belt. If you’ve watched wrestling in the last few years, you probably already intuited this. It’s quite obvious that wrestlers aren’t piledriving one another or using chairs all that often. This stems from the WWE’s increased concern over the health and well-being of their performers.

Beyond trying to avoid wrestler injuries, the memo lays out some rules about how the action should unfold. In short, refs should stay out of it, and wrestlers better not get an itch to be too improvisational. Referees are not supposed to factor into finishes, other than to count falls and, well, be referees. The days of refs like Nick Patrick being weirdly important characters are done. Additionally, the memo says “No impromptu talent promos.” That is to say, a wrestler can’t just up and decide to give a promo without running it past somebody.
Neither of these things is that surprising, either. In the end, the WWE is producing a show, and they have to run at least a somewhat tight ship. While it would be nice for wrestlers to have a little more leeway, in an ideal scenario, that just may not be feasibly possible. Plus, this could all still be fake. If it isn’t, it’s not world-shattering. The WWE is a scripted program, even when it comes to live events. Should we expect anything less?
