On Tuesday night’s Smackdown, Dolph Ziggler made the turn from face to heel after losing, once again, to Baron Corbin. This was probably a good thing for Ziggler. He’d gotten stale and was stagnating as the guy who would lose big matches. That’s better than being a bottom feeder, but being a high-class jobber can get kind of tedious, one imagines. However, it also raises a question. What’s the state of the top level faces of Smackdown?
Obviously, there’s John Cena, but he’s a part-timer, whether he wants to admit it or not. He will always be Smackdown’s top face, but he can’t be relied upon week in and week out. After him, there’s Dean Ambrose, who is the new Intercontinental Champion. By being champ, though, his position is clear.
He will be fighting off heels like The Miz for the title. He won’t be challenging AJ Styles again anytime soon, one assumes. That is, unless Smackdown follows RAW’s lead and completely forgets about their secondary title so Ambrose can feud with Styles.

The problem becomes what to do when Cena isn’t around. Apollo Crews seems primed to feud with Ziggler, but it will take a little while before he could be considered a viable contender to feud with Styles. Or maybe Cena will just take the title from Styles at Royal Rumble, and then they won’t really need another top-of-the-line face. That would really just be rearranging the pieces as opposed to making any real changes. However, maybe this is a case of if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
