A subtle change has happened over on the RAW brand. Their women’s champion is Charlotte Flair. Now, at first, this may not seem like a change. She’s been champion for a few weeks, although before that she and Sasha Banks were passing the title back-and-forth with great frequency. No, the notable thing here is that the champion is Charlotte Flair. She’s not merely known as Charlotte anymore. This is a small, but welcome change, and it should be the start of a sea change in WWE. It is weird how many one-named wrestlers there are.
The days of guys wrestling under names like The Berzerker or The Goon or Doink the Clown are over. Wrestlers don’t really have gimmicks. They have personalities, and they are largely supposed to be realistic. The WWE wants verisimilitude. They want it to feel more like legitimate sport. So how come so many people only have one name? Wrestlers should have first and last names, like people who aren’t Cher or Madonna do. That’s why it’s good that Charlotte is now Charlotte Flair. It’s an added dose of gravitas for the company. However, there’s still Natalya and Carmella and Sheamus and Cesaro and so on and so forth.
Singular named grapplers exist in a weird no-man’s land. They lack the panache of the old style gimmickry of The Undertaker or Andre the Giant, but they are just a step away from the down to Earth realism of names like Seth Rollins or the more fantastical AJ Styles. It’d be nice to see the WWE move away from single-named wrestlers, especially in the women’s division, where it feels sort of condescending to a degree. The Miz is the one exception. Let’s not mess with The Miz.
