These days, a lot of people feel like Smackdown is the superior show to RAW. They enjoy the storytelling more, the matches more, and overall they think the blue brand is just putting on a better program. You won’t hear a different argument here. Smackdown is, overall, a better show at the moment. What’s impressive is that this is true despite the presence of David Otunga, who is, unequivocally, one of the worst commentators in wrestling history.

Now, complaining about wrestling commentators is a time honored tradition. There’s not a single WWE announcer working today that doesn’t have detractors. Hell, there were probably people who didn’t like Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. Frankly, complaining about commentators isn’t unique to wrestling, as any sports fan can tell you. That being said, Otunga is truly awful.

Smackdown is overstuffed as is, frankly, now that Tom Phillips pops up here and there. However, the WWE likes to have a face commentator and a heel commentator paired with the down-the-middle play-by-play man. That’s fine. JBL, for his part, is good. Otunga, though, is wildly unqualified. He constantly stumbles over what he is trying to say. His points are often, well, pointless. Heaven forbid JBL try and get into some verbal sparring with him. Otunga falls apart and he’s lucky if he says anything coherent. He struggles with trying to be the face, especially when a heel wrestler (such as AJ Styles) stops by on commentary. If we have to hear Otunga try and intimate Styles is scared again (which would be the 800th time or so) it will be too soon.

A lot of people don’t like Otunga’s RAW counterpart, Byron Saxton, but he’s fine. Otunga, though, is a real problem. He’s completely in over his head, and Smackdown really needs to consider replacing him. Otherwise, Smackdown will always have at least one blemish on its product.
