Axl is best-known for his time in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), where he competed for six years.

In the company, Axl won Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s 1995 “Feud of the Year” for his epic rivalry with Ian Rotten. The two fictional brothers competed in an infamous Taipei Deathmatch.

Balls Mahoney and Axl were allies in ECW. Due to their vicious ways with steel chairs, Balls and Axl were known as The Hardcore Chair Swingin’ Freaks.

Through ECW, the duo was together until 1999.

.It’s obvious that ECW always had a special place in Axl’s heart.

Some former-ECW wrestlers immediately forget about the company, but Axl continued to represent the late promotion.

Specifically, Axl appeared at ECW One Night Stand 2005. Also, Axl made a one-night appearance with Total Nonstop Action (TNA) at ECW tribute show Hardcore Justice.

Axl was also prominent in the independent circuit.

He wrestled at the ECW reunion event Hardcore Homecoming in June of 2005. At this show, he teamed up with Ian Rotten to face The Gangstanators. The following night, Axl took on Ian in a rematch of the Taipei Deathmatch,

Years later, Axl competed at the Extreme Reunion event in April of 2012, taking on Balls Mahoney.

Overall, Axl Rotten was a gift to hardcore wrestling, and it’s a shame to see him go.
