After WWE unified the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships in December, there has been a lot of rumors that WWE would also unify the United States and Intercontinental Championships. In fact, in December, WWE itself teased a possible unification.
Later on, as the “Elimination Chamber” event was fast approaching, there were reports that the two titles would be unified at the event, in a match between then United States Champion Dean Ambrose and former Intercontinental Champion Big E. Yet, as we all know, no unification match occurred.
Now, F4WOnline is reporting that once again, there has been a lot of talk about unifying the United States and Intercontinental Championships. The plans for a unification match may have already begun, as Bad News Barrett and Sheamus recently captured the Intercontinental and United States titles respectively. However, it is also said that the talk may be increased only because of the upcoming tour of the United Kingdom, which stops in places close to home for both Barrett and Sheamus.
Editor’s Note
Although it would get rid of another mid-card title, I would love to see a unification match somewhere down the road. Both the US and IC titles have definitely lost prestige over the last year or two, but are now picking up steam. If the titles continue to seem important, a unification match would certainly make sense.
