As noted over the week, Daniel Bryan was to have neck surgery today, Thursday, May 15. We previously noted that Bryan’s surgery may very well determine the fate of his WWE World Heavyweight Championship, which will be announced on the May 19 edition of “Monday Night Raw.”
Now, WWE.com has posted an exclusive story, noting that Bryan underwent successful neck surgery. In its report, WWE provided more information on Bryan’s condition. The surgery was performed by Dr. Joseph Maroon in Pittsburgh Pa., in order to repair a lingering neck injury, which turned out to be a nerve issue. Maroon is best known for his work as an expert neurosurgeon, in addition to his work in the field of sports medicine. One of Maroon’s biggest contributions in terms of the sports field is his development of the ImPACT Test, which helps diagnose concussions.
Bryan’s procedure, known as a cervical foraminotomy, was performed in order to decompress the nerve root. While WWE would not announce a specific timeline for Bryan’s injury, the company did report that all is going well. Bryan is now out of surgery, and already has strength returning to his hands.
Editor’s Note
It’s great to see that Bryan underwent successful surgery, though I still have yet to hear of an athlete who has underwent unsuccessful surgery. Next Monday, it will be interesting to see if WWE vacates Bryan of his title. If they do, it may mean that Bryan may be out for the foreseeable future.
