Even though he’s made it clear that he’s never coming back to the ring, WWE fans keep asking Shawn Michaels about a comeback match, and he’s being asked about a comeback now more than ever because the Royal Rumble is taking place in his billed hometown of San Antonio, Texas.
On Thursday, the Heartbreak Kid appeared on Sirius XM’s Jim Norton and Sam Roberts, and he spoke about why he’s not coming back to the ring.
“It’s a busy job. I can certainly do [one match], but to me it’s harder to do that. If I’m doing stuff on a regular basis, and I make it part of my habit and my routine, it’s much easier for me to do it.
“I don’t overly think about [whether I’d still be good at it], but certainly there’s always that chance. When you get older, I’d imagine that’s something that’s bound to happen. But that’s just not the way that I roll.
“I can still remember as a talent being somewhat offended when the older guys would come in and take a big payoff. The thing is, I can at least say that, without a shadow of a doubt, I’ve never booked myself. I’ve never called them and said ‘hey I’d like to do something.’ Everything is, they call, and it’s an offer to me.
“I get asked all the time, and my wife doesn’t understand either, she’ll say ‘why don’t you just go back and make the payoff?’ Honestly, the greatest thing about those matches is the after. It’s the doing it in the ring, and then it’s the after when you go ‘that was phenomenal. Man that was awesome!’ sitting there with Taker and Michael Hayes, basking in that moment. But the whole process leading up to it is just…. All I did last year is I walked out for five minutes, and my wife sat there and looked at me and she goes, ‘I understand. It’s the whole process leading up to it that you don’t wanna go through.’
“I can’t do [the one off]. It doesn’t make me special, or strange, or weird. I can’t do it the way everybody else does because, if I’m going to do something I want to put 100 percent of my time into it and make it good.”
