It’s been one week since WWE decided to go all-in with Jinder Mahal’s push, and it looks like they’re still happy with their decision to make the “Maharaja” the top man on the blue brand.
According to Cageside Seats, WWE is satisfied with their decision to put the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on Mahal, mainly because of what it’s done for their YouTube, and social media pages.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has noted that the purpose of Mahal’s title win was to draw in the Indian market, and hopefully convince them to buy some of the new WWE Champ’s merchandise. But, as of right now, he only has one shirt for sale.
Furthermore, WWE was hoping that Jinder’s title win would help convince the Indian market to subscribe to their network, however, as Bryan Alvarez noted during Sunday’s Wrestling Observer Live, all of WWE’s pay-per-views are free on television in India, so they really don’t have a reason to subscribe to the service.
“I got a random text, or a random tweet, and I did a bunch of investigations,” said Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live. “All of these WWE pay-per-views that we watch on the WWE Network, they’re all free in India. India has more television viewers than any other country in the world. They air on a station called Ten, and the big four pay-per-views — the WrestleMania show, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, and Survivor Series, all air live on Ten. Now, the rest of them do not air live, but you can watch them on a 12-hour delay. Some of you might be thinking, ‘well, clearly WWE is trying to push the idea that if you buy the WWE Network, you can watch all of the pay-per-views live.’ Well, you’re probably right. The issue is, live [in India] means those pay-per-views are airing at 5 AM. So, fans would either buy the Network to get up and watch a show at 5 AM, or they don’t buy the Network and they watch in free at 5 PM the next day.”
