Earlier this week on Monday Night Raw, Darren Young won a Battle Royal to become the No. 1 contender for The Miz’s Intercontinental Championship.
It was a surprise redebut for Young alongside WWE Hall of Famer Bob Backlund. Those two continue to be one of the strangest duos in WWE today, but Miz vs. Young is set for “Battleground.” Does Darren Young win?
I’m speaking specifically from a booking standpoint. On paper, either man could win this match, and it would be effective for each character. Young’s moment on Raw was cool because the crowd got behind him.
Darren Young does have the tools to be a strong face in the midcard, and a shocking underdog win for him at “Battleground” would bring him right into that role. Miz would do an excellent job of putting him over too.
The real question is if a loss would thwart his run with Backlund before it ever really gets started? Young could get lost in the midcard very easily after a loss to Miz next Sunday.
It’s possible WWE is just trying to give him a platform to launch the character. Young losing to Miz would also give him some fresh heel heat to defeat another upcoming face like he did with Zack Ryder after Wrestlemania.
The other question is if giving Darren Young the IC title is the right move. It’s essentially getting the payoff at the beginning of the story, which is too easy.
WWE has to make a decision now that the match is booked, but it’s going to have great impact on the career of Darren Young. He could be a rising star after “Battleground,” or he could just be running in place a little faster.
Do you think Darren Young should win the Intercontinental Championship at “Battleground?”
