The deal Alberto Del Rio signed with WWE makes him $1,450,000 per year with a reduced schedule. Such a deal is obvious for Del Rio, but WWE truly felt they needed an experienced Hispanic star at the top of the roster.
Del Rio was in talks with WWE for several weeks. There are claims that the deal was reached as late as five weeks ago. The plan for Alberto Del Rio to return to WWE at “Hell in a Cell” and defeat John Cena in Los Angeles to win the United States Championship as a surprise was planned for several weeks. Their rematch is already planned.
At some point over the last few months, Del Rio was in talks with John Gaburick of TNA after his deal with Lucha Underground fell apart. TNA offered him the top spot in the company.
Del Rio is still being advertised as Alberto El Patron for a lot of shows in November and December. WWE is in Europe for a majority of November, so it’s most likely Del Rio won’t be booked on those shows, and he’ll be able to keep his commitments to AAA’s shows.
Before this deal between Alberto Del Rio and WWE became official, Del Rio was in talks with AAA for an exclusive deal. AAA just couldn’t match WWE’s offer, so Del Rio went where the money was best and got the best deal. AAA was disappointed but aren’t hard feelings between Del Rio and the promotion.
