Eric Bischoff is never one to keep his opinion to himself. Wrestlezone recently posted a recent episode of Bischoff’s podcast, “Bischoff on Wrestling,” and he had this to say:
“My response when people ask me, “How do you make wrestling cool again?” The fact is you can’t force that. It does have to happen organically. Certain things have to go along with that. There has to be certain opportunities and investments. All of that kind of thing. It’s really interesting to me, right now at this stage in my career, you start to see Wrestle Circus and other independents really emerging with a cool factor all of their own that’s completely all their own. It’s a very organic cool factor as opposed to a cookie cutter cool factor.”
Writer’s Note
Okay, I never really thought wrestling needed to be made “cool” again, because I never thought it wasn’t. Sure, there are elements lacking that I’d like to see, but in my 31 years of watching wrestling, I never deemed it as uncool. So, what does cool actually mean when it comes to professional wrestling? Does it mean making it cool to talk about in public? Does it mean making it the “it” thing to watch? Does it mean making it cool to respect the athletes? I’m not quite sure.
I do think that the change in television has put limitations on what wrestlers can do technically in the ring. There’s more promos than ever before and it takes a good “character” and “showman” to win over a crowd, but I wouldn’t consider them uncool. A snooze fest, maybe. Indy shows are hotter than ever right now and some wrestlers, and fans, think it’s “cooler” to go indy than mainstream in the WWE. Yet again, that’s not really saying wrestling is uncool. I’m not sure of where the “cool again” statement comes from but I don’t think professional wrestling has ever been uncool.
Just look and John Cena. Fans chat “Cena Sucks” and he wears old school jean shorts at every show and he’s constantly made fun of for being uncool. But even being uncool is still somehow cool in that world.
Fans are using the phrase “Legit Boss” in everyday dialogue and ‘RKO Out of Nowhere” is being used by everyone, not just wrestling fans. Pretty cool if you ask me.
I’d like to hear your thoughts. Sound off below and tell me if you think professional wrestling is “uncool” right now.
