Blink and you’d miss it. WWE has been rather busy as of late with a pair of pay per views in just over a week. That is a busy schedule for anyone but especially WWE, who usually has about a month between their major shows. They needed something big to keep up the attention and they seem to have found that with a pair of Universal Title changes. That may seem strange, but they have a reason for it.
Summerslam’s main event featured the Fiend defeating Braun Strowman to win the Universal Title for the second time in his career. As soon as the match ended though, Roman Reigns made his return and took out both men. The following Sunday at Payback, Reigns defeated the Fiend to start his second title reign, albeit with some help from new advocate Paul Heyman. The idea seemed to be a little strange for the Fiend, but there was a reason behind it.
According to Tom Colohue on the Dropkick DiSKussion podcast, WWE’s idea behind giving the Fiend a one week title reign was to build up sympathy for him as he won the title and then lost it to someone who was not even in the entire match. Reigns only appeared about ten minutes into the Payback main event before winning the title. WWE’s plan is to move forward with the Fiend, as well as Bray Wyatt, as the top face on SmackDown.
Did it work? Check out how the main events went down:
Opinion: I can get the thinking behind this one but it is a little bit of a strange way to go about doing things. The Fiend as a face is a weird enough idea, but at least they are doing something different with him. WWE is not doing all that well when it comes to top faces on the roster, but turning the Fiend might not be the most logical solution. They have an idea here, though I don’t know how well it is going to go.
What do you think of the idea? Will WWE make it work? Let us know in the comments below.
