At least he won’t be so broken. Matt Hardy has been wrestling for a very long time now, debuting all the way back in 1992. With one of the most physical, violent careers of all time, there’s very little that can be done to prolong his time in the ring much longer. However, there is a way that he can continue working in wrestling in a much less physical manner.
In a new interview with Busted Open Radio, Hardy’s wife Reby talked about her husband’s health and future prospects. Reby confirmed that Matt is taking some time off to reevaluate his career options, as he’s considering winding his in-ring career down and moving towards a backstage role. Matt has recently revealed that his back and pelvis have started fusing together due to some of his in-ring efforts over the years. Matt’s contract expires in March, meaning a decision would likely need to be made by then. Here are some of Reby’s comments, with transcription courtesy of Rajah.com:
“Matt is good. Matt is right now going through a bit of a transitional period. He’s not really sure what he’s going to be doing. His contract is up in March, which I’m not sure many people are aware of. But there’s sort of a decision to be made at this point as to whether or not he should continue his in-ring career or if he should pursue something different, which he would totally be up for and would be excited to do, I feel like. So, he’s kind of giving it a go right now backstage. He’s at SummerSlam. He’s not on the card but he’s there. And we’re kind of going to see from here. It’s really a transitional time right now.”
This kind of experience could be very valuable.
Opinion: I have no idea what’s next for Matt, but he’s turning 44 years old next month and after a twenty six year career, he can’t have long left in the first place. You have to imagine that his knowledge would be a huge value to the WWE roster, especially considering how many people probably grew up watching him. Let him show what he can do behind the scenes, which would be an incredible offering to the company.
