In a new interview posted to WWE’s YouTube channel, Austin talked about his thoughts on the match and the build towards the match, including the entire angle with Mike Tyson. As it turns out, Austin isn’t all that pleased with the match, mainly due to both wrestlers being a bit banged up. Austin was coming off his neck injury and Michaels had injured his back a few months earlier, not to mention Michaels’ personal issues, which were running rampant at the time.
As usual, Austin is worth listening to.
At the same time, Austin says that he wasn’t happy after the match but Vince McMahon said that it didn’t matter because it didn’t matter in the long run. Austin also had an issue with the cadence of guest referee Tyson’s count, which to be fair he does consider to be a minor issue at best.
Here’s a look back at the full show.
Opinion: I’ve heard Austin give this take before and really, I don’t think I can agree. The match was actually rather entertaining and is all the better when you consider the physical state of both guys. As Austin mentioned, the match wasn’t what mattered the most as it was all about what happened after he won the title. Everything started all over again the next night and that’s what really mattered.
